Robert
Created Friday 04 April 2014
Robert was a name beloved of the comital family of Turenne, and we see two counts of this name in the early Beaulieu documents, father and son, as well as a follower of theirs who appears to share their name. All these appereances cease by the 860s, however, and after that a new and more complex sequence starts as follows, in Beaulieu:
- XLIII (887, witness to donation of lands in Castelnau to Beaulieu by Frotar the future Viscount of Cahors)
- CLXIX (887, witness to donation of land in Casillac to Beaulieu by Count Godfrid II of Turenne)
- LXXIX (888, witness to donation of land in Brives to Beaulieu)
- CLV (893, witness to donation of land in le Vert to Beaulieu)
- LII (895, witness to donation of land in Castelnau to Beaulieu)
- LXXXVII (895, witness to donation of lands in le Vert to Beaulieu by Frotar of Cahors)
- XXIX (898, witness to donation of estate of Condat to Beaulieu by Count Godfrid II of Turenne)
- XXII (899, witness to donation of lands in Turenne to Beaulieu by Archambald, perhaps Vicar of Castelnau)
- CXXXIV (913, witness to donation of lands in le Vert to Beaulieu)
- LX (916, son of Baseno and Elena, brother of Aicard, Baseno, Ausbert and Rainulf, consenting to donation of lands in Castelnau and Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- LX (916, witness to above)
- LXV (918, witness to donation of lands in Casillac to Beaulieu)
- LXVI (927, lead witness to donation of lands in Turenne to Beaulieu)
- CXXXII (927x32, donor with wife Ermessinda of lands in Turenne to Beaulieu, identified as Count of Turenne by Deloche)
- XLIV (928, witness to donation of lands in Castelnau to Beaulieu by Abbot Jean)
- XLIV (928, another witness to the above)
- CVIII (932, 'the old count', almsman of Guello with nine others overseeing bequest of lands in Turenne to Beaulieu)
- LIII (940, donor of land in le Vert to Beaulieu)
- LVIII (943, kinsman of Agambert and therefore of his sons Gauzbert and Prior Gauzfred, witness to Agambert's donation of lands in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- XXVIII (943x8, father of Gauzbert, Boso, Adhémar, Odolric and Robert, uncle of Boso and Jean, soul beneficiary of donation by Gauzbert to Beaulieu of prioperties in Bétaille and Puy d'Arnac)
- LXX (954x67, soul beneficiary of donation of lands in Davazac to Beaulieu by Remi)
- CL (984, witness to a donation of property in Puy d'Arnac and le Vert by members of the le Vert clan to Beaulieu)
- LXXXV (984x5, son of Gauzlin and brother of Austorgius, reserved interests in donation of property in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- CXVII (997x1031, seller with wife Etienna to the priest Bernard of land at location not preserved)
- CXXII (1028x29, witness to sale to a monk of Beaulieu of land in Puy d'Arnac)
Sorting this out is a pain. We may at least distinguish a third count of Turenne of the name, as did Deloche, apparently already retired by the time his title is actually attested: this man would appear in CLXIX, XXIX, LXV, LXVI, CXXXII, CVIII and LXX, although only CXXXII & CVIII of these are at all certain. There also seems to be a man with strong ties to Castelnau, le Vert and Viscount Frotar of Cahors, who might thus be seen in XLIII, LXXIX, LII, LXXXVII, XXII, CXXXIV & LX, and perhaps another, the son of Baseno, in LX, XLIV, LIII & LVIII, but I'm not sure either of these can actually be rigorously given any single document, and the former might easily claim some of the appearances I've given the 'old count' above. I'm not sure anything further can be done with this.
