The monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll, in the valley of the same name, is one of the largest in Catalonia. Although substantially endowed by Count Guifré the Hairy in 885 (Condal 5), it existed as a monastery before then (VL VIII ap. I) and there is room for debate about whether it can really have been freshly established at Abadal's proposed date for the reopoulation of the county of Osona in 879. The massive size of its properties is indicated by the frequency with which it occurs, as below, but this is made very vague by the fact that all its documents, including the four cartularies that may by then have constituted the archive, were burnt at its second dissolution in 1835. A few of the most important documents were indexed or excerpted by the archivist Roc d'Olzinelles, a few are quoted in extenso by Bofarull in his Condes de Barcelona, and a few were registered by the cathedral of Vic when it took over the running of Palau from the monastery in the 1660s, but this effectively gives us most of the icing and a thin slice of what was a much bigger cake. It's vexing.
