Beaulieu LVIII

Created Thursday 17 April 2014

Feb. 943, a donation to St-Pierre de Beaulieu by one Agambert, giving inherited property at Miègemont, to wit a demesne house and buildings where he lives, a demesne vine and demesne meadow, two capmansiones of which the latter comes with a vine and lands and two more manses with vines and lands next to the villa. All of this is given for his soul, his father's and mother's souls, his brother's, the priest Ermengaud's and his son Gauzfred's, but is reserved in usufruct under a cens of twelve denarii to be paid in wax for the length Agambert and then his son Gauzfred's lives, under the control of Prior Gauzfred, before finally reverting to Beaulieu. Rather than a reversion clause if the properties are alienated, the abbot and Gauzfred (the son, not the prior! but are they in fact the same?) are expressly included in the penalty clause, which names Datan, Abiron, Ananias and Saphira, the full kit and kaboodle. There is however a clause where if the property is disputed, then Agambert's son Gauzbert and his kinsman Robert buy it back for 100 solidi. These two lead the witnesses. There are connections here that would explain a lot if I were sure who was who, I think! This is also the first document to mention Abbot Bernard.
