Gerald
Created Saturday 15 March 2014
There are lots of occurrences of people called Gerald in the Beaulieu documents, who cannot all be the same person. This can be shown by the following conspectus, of Beaulieu:
- CLXXIX (868, witness to donation of land in Sérillac to Beaulieu)
- LXXXI (870, witness to donation of land in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- XI (887, witness to donation by Archbishop Frotar of Bourges of lands in Yssandon to Beaulieu)
- CLXIX (887, witness to donation by Godfrid II of Turenne of a church in Casillac to Beaulieu)
- LXXVI (894, participant in exchange with the abbot of Beaulieu in which Gerald concedes property in Castelnau for property in Rodez)
- XIII (897, witness to the endowment of St-Christophe de Favars)
- CXLVII (916, witness to a big donation in Uzerche to Beaulieu)
- CXLVII (916, another witness to the same donation)
- CLX (917, witness to a donation of lands in Rouffiac, le Vert and Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- LXXII (923, witness to donation of property in le Vert to Beaulieu)

- CIX (968, almsman of Hugues conceding various properties to Beaulieu)
- CIX (968, another of Hugues's almsmen)
- CXLVIII (969x84, lead witness of a gift of property in Casillac to Beaulieu)
- CLXIV (c. 971, son of Rigald, co-donor of properties in Rouffiac, Argentat and Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- CXVIII (997x1031, cleric, witness of donation of property in unknown location to Beaulieu)
- CXVIII (997x1031, another witness of same donation)
- LXXXVIII (C10thx11th, lead witness of donation of lands in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- LXXXVIII (C10thx11th, another witness of same donation)
- CXLVI (C10thx11th, son of Aizo, brother of Odolric, Guarner and Étienne, reserved interest with brothers and lead witness ahead of them of donation of property in Montignac by father to Beaulieu)
It is obvious first and foremost that this is a common name, which makes any links at all problematic. The C10thin appearances might all be a man with ties to the abbey who just turns up a lot, and the manse-holder in Uzerche is obviously the same guy both times (though is he also one of the earlier witnesses there?) but both of these are hard to rule instances in or out of. The Uzerche guy is the only one I feel confident in marking separately.
