Rigald

Created Thursday 10 April 2014

Rigald is a name that occurs frequently in the Beaulieu documents, as follows:

This is quite complicated to sort out, though a family thread must be traced through some of these documents; in particular, it seems that a Rigald must be wherever there is a Gerald and vice versa! Bernards are also involved, and a Puy d'Arnac focus seems reasonably clear. It seems that we have two generations of the same family here, a first one showing up at the end of the ninth century in close connection to Beaulieu, perhaps because of where he owns property, then a gap of perhaps one generation till the father of Gerald starts to turn up in the latter half of the tenth century. He is probably uncle of the son of Gerbert, but this is not provable from what we have. The last three are probably also all the same man but he is not obviously connected to this family, but rather that descending from Étienne d'Arnac. The early le Vert focus of the first guy however might suggest that these two families are also connected at some level, though we cannot say how.
