Étienne
Created Saturday 15 March 2014
A man named Étienne appears in the following Beaulieu documents:
- LXXXI (870, final witness of a donation of property in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- CLVI (893, witness to donation of property in Espagnac to Beaulieu)
- CXLII (894, donor to Beaulieu of property in Puy d'Arnac)
- CLVII (899, witness to bequest of property in Castelnau to Beaulieu, probably actually at the abbey)
- CLXXXIX (C9th/10th, brief of properties conceded to Beaulieu in Puy d'Arnac and Uzerche, naming brothers Ebolo and Hugues)
- LIX (913, donor with wife Alimberga and son Ratbod of property in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- LXXXIX (913, brief of property in le Vert, Turenne, Brives, and Puy d'Arnac conveyed to Beaulieu by a nameless donor assumed by Deloche to be Étienne, naming son Ratbod, brother Ratbod and another kinsman Étienne)
- LXV (918, previous owner of property in Casillac now donated to Beaulieu, also witnessing)
- LXXII (923, sale to Abbot of Beaulieu of property in le Vert, naming father Hugues)
- LXXII (923, witness to same sale)
- LVI (923x35, witness to a donation of land in Casillac to St-Pierre de Beaulieu)
- CLXVII (925, donor with wife Aldegardis of property in Brives to Beaulieu)
- CLXVII (925, witness to same donation)
- XXXVIII (926, donor with mother Aitrudis of property in Castelnau to Beaulieu)
- CVIII (932, witness to comital donation of property in Turenne to Beaulieu)
- LIII (940, witness of donation of property in le Vert to Beaulieu)
- LXX (954x67, lead witness of donation of property in Davazac to Beaulieu)
- XLVII (960, lead witness in following of Count Raimond I of Toulouse of quitclaim over church of St-Médard-de-Presque, which remains Beaulieu's)
- CIX (968, almsman of bequest of property by Hugues in le Vert and other places to Beaulieu)
- CL (984, donor with brother Ratbod in brief of properties in Puy d'Arnac given to Beaulieu)
- CL (984, witness to same donation)
- LXXXV (984x5, witness to donation of property in Puy d'Arnac to Beaulieu)
- LXVII (C10thx11thin, witness to donation of property in Espagnac to Beaulieu).
This is a pain to sort out. There are clearly at least two of these men concurrently in the latter part of the period, one of whom is important enough to turn up everywhere and one of whom is related to one of the earlier ones... Doing a matrix clarifies somewhat, as follows:
- if the Quercy instances relate to anything it is only each other;
- the two Espagnac occurrences are not feasible to connect either
- the comital witness seems to have interests in Turenne
- the Puy d'Arnac strain of the name seems to be the kindred that favours the name Ratbod as well; we have an Étienne who is brother of a Ratbod and father of a Ratbod, then a much later one who is also brother of a Ratbod and thus probably son of the previous one
- one of the Puy d'Arnac occurrences is also brother of Hugues;
- one of them also holds land in le Vert;
- all other occurrences of Étiennes connected with Hugues also concern in le Vert.
This probably shows us a clan with lands in both Puy d'Arnac, in which case we have a C10thin set of brothers, Étienne, Ratbod, Ebolo and Hugues, and Hugues has a son called Étienne while Étienne has a son called Ratbod who is brother to an Étienne; this may be why two Étiennes so often recur together later on, the cousins witnessing each others' stuff. It seems fair to assign Étienne and son Étienne and Ratbod to Puy d'Arnac and Hugues and son Étienne to le Vert. I term the senior Étienne Étienne I d'Arnac, his son Étienne II d'Arnac and that man's cousin, the son of Hugues, Étienne de la Vert, but not all of their mutual appearances can be assigned between these. Meanwhile, there is also a man of Castelnau and Casillac visible who may also be any of the later three of these. What fun!
