Beaulieu LXXXIX

Created Monday 14 April 2014

xc.913, a breve made by Étienne (says Deloche, though in fact the transactor is not named in the text as it stands and the identification must be made by his relation to two persons called Ratbod) of a great deal of property, as follows:

  1. three tenanted manses in Bretenoux, to brother Ratbod to be held in obedience to Saint-Jean (I believe Deloche must have punctuated this wrongly, as otherwise these properties have no clear legatee; also, no idea which Saint-Jean);
  2. two denarii of vine at la Rivière running into la Combe, these apparently also to brother Ratbod;
  3. a denarius of vine at l'Ouradour, which this document places in Turenne, this apparently also to brother Ratbod;
  4. four denarii in le Saule near Saint-Martin de Brive, this apparently also to brother Ratbod;
  5. a manse at 'la Pedraga' in Maumont with appurtenances, to his daughters (unnamed);
  6. a tenanted manse in le Saule, apparently also to the daughters;
  7. twelve denarii of vines in le Saule to St-Pierre de Beaulieu, to be held by brother Ratbod;
  8. four manses in Viellevigne to his daughters but held under the 'judgement' of his kinsman Étienne, his brother Ratbod, the transactor's wife and his fideles, this one obviously a bit more wrapped up in the family;
  9. the rest of his alod, to be divided between his sons, reverting to the other if one dies and to St-Pierre and Ratbod if both of them do;
  10. all his fevum, to his sons and his wife equally at the mercy of his lords (plural);
  11. land and wood at 'Podio Bertelaigane' to his daughters.
This is a pretty respectable amount of territory for someone who's fairly clearly at 'master' level, with both plural seniores and fideles, and it's noticeable how little of what's here St-Pierre is getting, but that that little is still recorded with them. On the other hand it should also be noted that what they are getting they are getting in terms that only really make sense if Ratbod is in fact one of the monks... There are no witnesses or really any content beyond the listed bequests.
