Beaulieu XLVII

Created Friday 18 April 2014

13th Jul. 960, an intriguing notice of a quitclaim coming out of a trial held before Count Raimond I of Rodez and Quercy at an unidentified church of St-Sernin. It reports that Bernard and Gerbert came to the court, both separately contesting a gift of Rigald after the death of his son Gerald, by which the church of St-Médard de Presque was given to Beaulieu (a document we don't have, significantly, as if this would do instead, although we do have another of Rigald's donations, which must in fact predate this one, pace Deloche). It amuses Raimond and his nobiles to have the two contestants appoint champions and fight for it, but though they fight from the second hour to sunset neither can best the other, so the court declares St-Pierre's title vindicated. They apparently keep this as title, even though there is no sign from this document that they were represented at the hearing.
