The founder of St-Pierre de Beaulieu, Raoul's father was the Count of Turenne of the same name and his wife Aiga. In 823 (Beaulieu CLXXXV) he was placed under the care of the 'religious man' Bertram and put into clerical training. By 841 (Beaulieu XX) he was Abbot of Solignac, though he appears without title as a fidelis of King Pippin II in 842 (Beaulieu VI); by 844 (Beaulieu XXXIV) he was Archbishop of Bourges, as which his favoured title seems to have been 'Bishop of the First See'. He made his will in 860 (Beaulieu I) but continues to appear till 864x6 (Beaulieu XXVI). A full catalogue of his appearances, in order, is:
Beaulieu CLXXXV, XX, VI, XXXIV, CLXXXIV, VII, XVI, XXXIII, XXIII, XXIV, XVIII, V, XIX, XXI, I, XXV, IV, XXVI, XXVII, VIII, XII & XIII; the last four are posthumous.
