Beaulieu VIII

Created Saturday 22 March 2014

14th Jun. 882, a precept of King Carloman confirming royal protection of the gifts of fiscal property at Chameyrac and le Saillant to St-Pierre de Beaulieu. If taken literally the narrative would suggest that Carloman had never heard of the place and had to be told about it by Archbishop Frotar and Abbot Gairulf, who also seem to have complained of attacks by evil men and so on, but I don't really know that any of this can be taken as anything more than due form. They have come all the way north to somewhere in Anjou called Lipciacum for this. Note that it is only the two properties that are placed under protection and immunity (the latter implicit in the judicial exclusion granted but not actually stated), not the monastery as a whole, although the monastery is guaranteed free elections. Does Carloman's scribe not know how this game is usually played, or is he unwilling?
