Étienne was son of Hugues, and nephew and cousin to two more Étiennes, only the elder of whom he seems to coincide with. He had landed interests in le Vert from his father and uncle and in Turenne and Brives from his uncle, the latter perhaps drawing him into the following of the counts of Toulouse. This is obviously tricky to distinguish but his most likely appearances are in Beaulieu LXXXIX, LXXII, CLXVII, CVIII, LIII, XLVII & CIX (913-968).
