Beaulieu LV

Created Friday 04 April 2014

May 885, a donation by one Ermenric of an ex-royal estate in Dignac lately got from King Carloman, the castle of Chatau with two manses, a manse in Chauffour, eleven manses and a couple of extra slave families in Pinsac, four in Reignac, two in 'Quadris' (apparently: it seems to be a repeated entry), one in Crépignac, one in Pétrissac, one in Rouffiac, one in 'Mercario', one in Sousac-de-Marmiesse, one in Matrinhac, one in 'Felinos', one in Laval, one in 'Joris', 28 manses in all plus all their slaves, including those who may have run away (presumably a clause intended to stop landlords denuding their estates before transfer and then recovering the slaves later?) to St-Pierre de Beaulieu. Some of the manses have only one named occupant across several, but these are not those that listed as empty, and some have neither emptiness nor named occupants. The donation is intended, among other things, to fund a feast on the anniversary of his death. Dating is by the death of Carloman. The whole document, lacking only the repeated clause but with a slightly different Apocalyptic proem and other formulaic differences, an extra slave on one of the estates and an importantly different provision about the feast, is repeated in Beaulieu CLXVI; that is presumably the final version, since its differences are hard to explain by miscopying. Why however are they so far apart in the cartulary?
