Beaulieu CLXIII

Created Monday 07 April 2014

Oct. 887, a notice of the donation recorded in Beaulieu CLXII of lands in several places in le Vert by Unald to St-Pierre de Beaulieu. The witnesses to the two actions are not the same, an in fact neither are the participants as the operation is carried out by a missus, Aicard 'de Mercoeur', on behalf of both Unald and his here-unnamed brother, and done "per cordam signi et per hostium de domo" in the style that occasionally appears here, referring explicitly back to the previous charter despite the differences between that and this. The Abbot and the monks are said to have demanded the notice, which makes more sense when there is already a charter than supposing that otherwise there would have been no record at all. Perhaps it was the vicarious nature of the transfer that demanded the special treatment? The redaction seems faulty, with the witness list begun before the dating clause and then resumed after it, which may suggest that the dating clause was not where the copyist expected it on the original. The fact that two names in the witness list are repeated is hard to interprett in the light of such possible confusion.
