St Totteringham's Day was the day when Arsenal fans celebrate the fact that Tottenham can no longer catch Arsenal in the League. It is a movable feast, but usually falls in March, April or May. It was the day to collect on bets made by over-optimistic Spurs fans in the close season who think that "this is the year".

See the links on the left for more information.

    Mon, 04 May 2015

    St Totteringham's 2015 is May 4th

    It is officially St Totteringhams:
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3470+33
    Spurs3558+593(67)

    A few facts

    • Twenty years in a row.
    • If you had a £1 bet back in 1995/6 and invested it double or quits it'd be worth £524,288 today
    • The fiftieth St Totteringhams.
    • The 65th time Arsenal have finished above Spurs in the league
    • The 80th time Arsenal have been above Spurs if you include the 15 years we were a league club and they weren't.
    • We only need a point for 4th place and (mumble) years of Champions League football in a row (and Liverpool won't make the goals up if we don't)

And finally: We have a cup final this year too!

Meanwhile we can enjoy St Totteringham's day 2015.

TWENTY YEARS: Mind the really rather large gap.

Full post to follow but that is it! May 4th is Officially St Totteringham's Day 2015.

Twenty years in our shadow! And that is the fiftiethSt T's, and the 80th time we've been above Spurs in the league...

Twenty years since Spurs finished above Arsenal.

(I'll calm down in a bit!)

Champagne on ice for the big two-oh!

As I write this it is half time. Arsenal have a 3-0 lead and look good for it. Being a glass half empty sort of chap I do think we need a bit of care in the second half, a couple of Hull breaks could easily have led to more. (But 3-0. And Hull. Really?)

So while it isn't over, lets have a look at if it stays the same...
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3470+34
    Spurs3558+593(67)
That would be St Totteringham's day with four matches remaining. Come on you Gunners!

We just need to draw or win for it to be twenty years in a row

    Almost certainly St Totteringham's Eve...

So City held on to the lead (just) and we can almost touch St Totteringhams...
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3367+31
    Spurs3558+593(67)

Our next game is tomorrow and we need a point or more against Hull. If we want to finish second then we ought to beat them. So fingers crossed that tomorrow will be twenty years in a row.

Sat May 9 Stoke City (a)

    Sun May 17Manchester Utd (a)
    Wed May 20Sunderland (h)
Sun May 24West Bromwich Albion (h) Everton (a)

So even if we can't get a point against Hull, I'd have though Stoke might help out or we'd get something against Swansea... Not long to go.

Twenty years in a row. Mind the gap!

    Possibly St Totteringham's Eve...

As I write this we are close to the brink. City are 1-0 up with about 25 minutes to play against Spurs. If things stay like that...
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3367+31
    Spurs3558+593(67)

If it stays like that then it unbelievably unlikely that Spurs can catch us but not yet impossible. Just one more point will do though...

    Update in 20minutes or so...

    Why four points isn't enough!

A lot of people on Twitter tweeting that we only need four points. Presumably because at that point we will have matched the maximum total Spurs can get.

I hope it is obvious why this isn't enough for St Totteringham, but just in case it isn't.

Suppose Spurs win all the remaining matches 3-0. We get a 1-0 win and a draw in the next two games then lose the remaining games 4-0.

I'll be the first to say: That is never going to happen but it isn't impossible. And St T's is about what is possible, not what is likely.

What would happen? Firstly Spurs and Arsenal end on 70 points. So it comes down to goal difference.

Now we start with a huge advantage here +31 against Spurs +6.

But the four wins for Spurs but them up to +18.

Our win takes us to +32, but then the four defeats knock off 16. Spurs would pinch it on goal difference.

We can gloat after four points because it is ridiculously unlikely to not be enough, but it wouldn't be St Totteringhams until it was certain. We can gloat about the fact we are likely to finish above Spurs already! St Totteringhams however needs five points.

When the Saints nearly go marching in...

The Saints help a little but losing two leads against Spurs is a bit disappointing. Still it does move us on. The important bit is now:
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3266+31
    Spurs3458+684(70)

That means five more needed to get St Ts. The Earliest possible date is May 3rd: needing Arsenal beating Chelsea and City getting a point or more at White Hart Lane. Possible but unlikely.

The ever shortening run-in suggests to me that we won't need to wait until after May 11. I can't see us not getting four points off Hull and Swansea, and can easily see Spurs dropping points against Man City or the Rugby Club.
    DateArsenalSpurs
    Sun Apr 26Chelsea (h)
Sun May 3 Manchester City (h)
    Mon May 4Hull City (a)
Sat May 9 Stoke City (a)
    Mon May 11Swansea (h)
Sat May 16 Hull City (h)
    Sun May 17Manchester Utd (a)
    Wed May 20Sunderland (h)
Sun May 24West Bromwich Albion (h) Everton (a)

Hopefully at 6pm tomorrow I'll have a more optimistic update! We can beat Chelsea.

    Arsenal v Villa at Wembly!

She wore a yellow ribbon in the merry month of May...

    Spurs sadly won.

    The situation is...
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3266+31
    Spurs3357+695(72)

So we still need 7 more points to be sure. (Six is not enough: to be certain we need the daylight. Six points will not give St Totteringhams! It is unlikely Spurs will make up the points but we don't celebrate yet, the same applies to goal difference.)

Sadly this means it can't be in April. Even the best results next weekend leave us just on the brink. The best results include us beating Chelsea.

    So the run-in...
    DateArsenalSpurs
    Sat Apr 25Southampton (a)
    Sun Apr 26Chelsea (h)
Sun May 3 Manchester City (h)
    Mon May 4Hull City (a)
Sat May 9 Stoke City (a)
    Mon May 11Swansea (h)
Sat May 16 Hull City (h)
    Sun May 17Manchester Utd (a)
    Wed May 20Sunderland (h)
Sun May 24West Bromwich Albion (h) Everton (a)

So best case will be on Sunday May 3rd, and I'm confident it will be before we play at Old Trafford. Nearly there...

    Spurs lose to Villa...

Quick update between Spurs and Arsenal fixtures. Despite a late red card Villa hang on to win 1-0. A bit of a surprise that.

    The situation is...
    GamesPointsGDPoints behind(games left)(max points)
    Arsenal3163+30
    Spurs3154+596(72)

This means Arsenal need only 10 points to finish above Spurs: 3 wins and a draw out of the last seven games. Alternatively Spurs need to drop points which might speed things up. No change to th earliest date, which is still 26 April. That relies on us winning now of course...

Oops. Hadn't updated the run in dates...

I hadn't updated the run in to reflect all the televised games.

    The correct fixture list is...
    DateArsenalSpurs
    Sat Apr 11Burnley (a) Aston Villa (h)
Sat Apr 18FA Cup Semi Final
    Sun Apr 19Newcastle Utd (a)
    Sat Apr 25Southampton (a)
    Sun Apr 26Chelsea (h)
Sun May 3 Manchester City (h)
    Mon May 4Hull City (a)
Sat May 9 Stoke City (a)
    Mon May 11Swansea (h)
Sat May 16 Hull City (h)
    Sun May 17Manchester Utd (a)
    Wed May 20Sunderland (h)
Sun May 24West Bromwich Albion (h) Everton (a)

This has no impact on the earliest date as all the corrections are in May. Updates to follow the matches later today!
