Thetford is the first "major" station on the line from Ely to Norwich; Central Trains services stop here even when they do not at other stations along the line.
The station is in two parts. The earlier part dates from the station's opening in 1845 and is in a similar style to those at Brandon and Wymondham. A later extension was built in red brick by the GER for their (now closed) line from Bury St. Edmunds; this extension is now used for the ticket office:
