Amy Sheldon took over as maintainer in early 1996, and wrote the infrastructure of what we would recognize as the present-day FAQ.

Aphrael was the next maintainer, and wrote much of the El/Tam material in the FAQ.

Aphrael's extended absence made it difficult to get rtfm.mit.edu to stop autoposting her FAQ. As a temporary measure, Sarabian posted the Updates and Corrections, created with the aid of a working group of AFE regulars.

Once the autoposting was disabled, Vanan took over as maintainer. He merged Aphrael's FAQ with the Updates and Corrections, and added a large amount of original and contributed material. By this time, the FAQ had become sufficiently large that it had to be posted in three parts.
