Dove Holes, it turns out, has nothing to do with doves but everything to do with water (the modern Welsh dŵr). It's a small village in the High Peak area of Derbyshire, where we arrived by train for a short bike ride to Hope.
The station was opened in 1863, but there are no extant station buildings, so it's just modern shelters. The entrance to platform 1, for trains towards Buxton:
