National

• Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) - heavy rail; includes:
  • Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) - infrastructure manager
  • Trenitalia - passenger operator
• Italo - heavy rail operator on RFI infrastructure

"Private" Railways

There are many railways in Italy described as "private", i.e. not state-owned. It is hoped to add details for all these railways in due course.

Lombardia

Bergamo

• ATB - funiculars
• Tramvie Elettricche Bergamasche (TEB) - light rail: Bergamo - Albino

Sardegna

• Azienda Regionale Sarda Trasporti (ARST) - heavy rail (narrow gauge) on former FdS lines; light rail in Caglari and Sássari
• Trenino Verde - tourist heavy rail on former FdS lines, operated by ARST
