Urgell

Created Thursday 02 May 2013

The county of Urgell is high in the Pyrenees at its northern extent, bordered by modern Andorra, but stretches far into the south with what was in our period an open frontier debouching west of Cardona. It was bordered on the west by the county of Pallars and on the east by that of Cerdanya and the pagus of Conflent.

The diocese of Urgell was rather larger, covering the whole of its associated county but also Cardona, Berguedà Cerdanya and part of Besalú as well as both Pallars and, initially, Ribagorça, both of which at times had their own bishopric that also covered the other county. All of this would give rise to jurisdictional difficulties for the bishops of Urgell.
