Ermengol was Count of Urgell from 993 until 1010, when he died on the campaign to Córdoba from which he gets his byname. He was son of Count-Marquis Borrell II of Barcelona, Girona, Osona and Urgell and Countess Ledgarda of Barcelona, Girona and Osona, and thus brother of Count-Marquis Ramon Borrell of Barcelona, Girona and Osona and of Abbess Riquilda of Sant Pere de les Puelles de Barcelona. He was succeeded by his own son Ermengol II. He was lord of Bishop Sal·la of Urgell, presumably among many others, and was paid for the succession to that prelate of his nephew St Ermengol.
