The most civilised way is the overnight ferry, which has integrated
train ticketing, and can be booked from Stena, with the option:

  Elk NS-Station in Nederland -> Elk Greater Anglia station

15h overnight, but one is mostly at the bar/wifiing/snoozing:

  19:35 Leiden Centraal -> 20:03 Schiedam Centraal
  20:07 Schiedam Centrum -> 20:32 Hoek van Holland Haven
  22:00 Hoek van Holland Haven -> 06:30 Harwich International
  08:30 Harwich International -> 10:25 Cambridge

Then returning on the Bank Holiday Monday:

  19:44 Cambridge -> 21:29 Harwich International
  23:00 Harwich International -> 08:00 Hoek van Holland
  08:26 Hoek van Holland -> 08:56 Schiedam Centrum
  08:56 Schiedam Centrum -> 09:25 Leiden Centraal

The journey should be even better in 2017 next year after Steve's
personal railway station has finally(!) opened:
