About mnementh...

It's traditional to have a page about your computer on your Web site somewhere, so this is mine...

Pronunciation

Here's the answer to the question everybody asks...
mnementh is pronounced "nem-enth". You can think of it as being spelt and pronounced in the same manner as the word "mnemonic". Happy now?

mnementh the computer

mnementh is my personal Linux box, so it's essentially a standard PC clone. AMD K6/233 processor, couple of hard drives, the usual. Processing power and memory are adequate, since I recently gave it a memory upgrade. It's only got a 14 inch monitor, but since I use kuzuth as my X server I don't really care any more!

In particular, this is a Debian GNU/Linux system. My personal opinion is that Debian is a very nice distribution, but that you should on no account touch dselect after the initial installation. OK, you can use it to list the packages in a convenient form, but use apt-get and dpkg to do the actual work...

mnementh runs kernel version 2.2.9 at the moment; I've long since completely discarded the DOS/Win3.1 partition which it used to dual boot to.

mnementh the dragon

Dragon

[this isn't the right type of dragon, but I like it anyway. It's from wuarchive.wustl.edu, so I think it's OK to use it... If it's yours, contact me, please.]

So why the funny name? Well, it's a reference to the Dragon series of books by Anne McCaffrey. I've not been so interested in the books recently, but I still like the naming scheme - I'm naming all my computers after the dragons. This provides a nice large name space, as recommended in RFC 1178. The only disadvantage is that nobody else seems to be able to pronounce or remember any of my machine names...

Currently I'm trying to match dragons to computers (although this probably won't last...). mnementh is a large dragon, and modern rather than an 'old-timer'. This matches the PC fairly closely...
