Is it just me or is there a surge of alternate init activity in Debian currently?

You don’t use Debian for these.

You use Debian for the integration it provides.

It’s a good choice for *some* containerised things, as well as
a containerised thing can even be called good-ish (hahahaha…),
but not for *all* of them.
