Thanks to everyone who voted. Without further ado, here are the results of
the vote that has been going on for the last two weeks. For those who missed
the vote, you were asked to choose one favourite from each of the three

Since the number of suggested groups was so large, I quite expected the votes
to be spread thinly across the possibilities. I added the separate group
hierarchy and group leafname sections to try to restrict the choice a little
more to try to produce a clear cut view of opinions. In the event, the three
sections have produced fairly consistent results.

With strong votes for comp.arch.homedesigned, comp.hardware, and
homedesigned, this would suggest an overall support for
comp.hardware.homedesigned, a choice not included in the vote because it was
never suggested to me.

Likewise, the strong support for sci.engineering.digital.hobbyist,
sci.electronics and digital.hobbyist, seem to suggest a combination group
name of sci.electronics.digital.hobbyist.

Therefore, I suggest the choices to be considered are:

comp.arch.homedesigned
comp.hardware.homedesigned
sci.electronics.digital.hobbyist
sci.engineering.digital.hobbyist

If there is reasonable discussion on the issue, and there is consensus that
it is a good idea, I am thinking of running another vote on just these four
names in a few weeks time, to decide on the one which we should take as our
working title. If there are no objections, I may also consider including in
this a question about 'Bot moderation, as suggested by Randy Gardner.

I would welcome any comments about these suggestions or the vote itself,
either mailed to me or posted to the group.

Cheers,
Theo

alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt Second Vote Results

Thanks to everyone who voted in my second vote for finally deciding on a new
group name, and on its moderation status. The results are as follows:

Number of votes cast: 68
Number of invalid votes: 1

Choice of group name:
---------------------
sci.electronics.digital.hobbyist 18
comp.arch.homedesigned 17
comp.hardware.homedesigned 13
No preference 11
sci.engineering.digital.hobbyist 5
Would oppose a new group 4

Should it be robomoderated?
---------------------------
Yes 52
No preference 11
No 5

Due to the closeness of the group name vote, I'd like to explain that the
invalid vote was received after the deadline had passed, and was for
sci.engineering..., so would have made no difference to the final result.

Therefore, sci.electronics.digital.hobbyist comes out narrowly as the winner.
I've been contacted by Mark Zenier, who was in charge of the sci.electronics
reorganisation, to suggest that this be changed to
sci.electronics.design.digital.hobbyist. The reason for this is that there
were numerous flamewars at the time of the reorganisation on the subject of
deciding whether to split it into s.e.analog(ue) or s.e.digital, and the
current hierarchy won in the end. The slight modification to produce a name
of s.e.design.digital.hobbyist makes it fit in more with the current
structure.

I can see there is also significant support for comp.arch.homedesigned, so if
there is opposition to s.e.design.digital.hobbyist from those who voted for
s.e.digital.hobbyist, c.a.h will be chosen as the working name. Note that
these may well be vetoed by people on news.* who control the creation
process.

On the question of moderation, the vote shows there is overwhelming support
for it. I've contacted Jan-Derk Bakker, who is in charge of the current
cancelbot, and he says it would be fairly easy to convert it to a bot
moderator.

Now that the group name and moderation status have been decided, the group
creation process proper can start. For the purpose of discussing the
mechanics of it (charters, RFDs, CFVs etc), a mailing list has been set up.
If you want to participate in this, please email me for details of how to
subscribe.

Comments would be welcomed, either to me or to the group. I'd especially
like to know if you voted for s.e.digital.hobbyist and don't like
s.e.design.digital.hobbyist.

alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt Third Vote Results

Subject: Final group name vote: The Results
Newsgroups: alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt

Message-ID: <19971220.155258.75@marketto.demon.co.uk>
X-Mailer: TTFN version 0.40 (Acorn RISC OS)

Thanks to everyone who voted. The final vote is over, and I can now reveal
the results. I appreciate my persistent announcements weren't the most
interesting content achh's ever had, but I hope the end result is
worthwhile. So - the results are:

Total number of votes cast:	77

Do you think a new group should be created?
-------------------------------------------
Yes	75
No 2

If so, what should it be called?
--------------------------------
comp.arch.homedesigned 36
sci.electronics.design.digital.hobbyist	35
No preference (including no creation) 6

Therefore, by the narrowest margin, comp.arch.homedesigned wins. As
suggested by B. Vermo, during the past week I have posted to
comp.arch.embedded and sci.electronics.design to find out their views of
each of the proposed new groups. While there was positive support from
comp.arch.embedded, sci.electronics.design was distinctly lukewarm. I think
this generally supports the view in favour of comp.arch.homedesigned.

On the new group mailing list, we are working towards finalising an RFD,
which should hopefully be posted in the New Year. The mailing list would
welcome any new subscribers, so if you are interested, please email me.

Thanks to everyone for supporting (and opposing) the creation process.
Hopefully we should finally be getting somewhere...

Cheers,
Theo
