The son of a Redcap and a maidservant at the Covenant of Harco, Angelo was born in House Mercere's domus magna in summer 1190. Angelo's Redcap father was a member of the Mercere-led Cult of Heroes, and at his wedding he and his bride were enchanted with the ritual *Mercury's Blessing* (CrVi 25), which is said to create an aura that draws the attention of the gods to the child, and increases the chance that they will be born with the Gift or other heroic attributes. Accordingly, despite its' gentle nature, Angelo's gift was being looked for, and was therefore noticed in his early childhood. He had to this point been an inquisitive young child, fascinated by the previously active young childhood was interrupted by being given a crash education in Latin grammar and the liberal arts before being apprenticed to his Great Uncle Pietro, a Magus in the line of the great metamagician Mutantes. Pietro taught Angelo Hermetic magic as further developed by the Mutantes, showing him how Bonisgaus's theory had been developed by the great metamagician to enhance its flexibility. Angelo's understanding of the nature of metamagic extended easily enough to the broader art of Muto, but it was the art of Creation at which he truly shone. Troubled by dreams of entire villages dying to a great pestilence, he made a special study of healing magic and declared himself to be an enemy of Pestilence.
Following his graduation Angelo remained at Harco for some time, working as a healer while studying the Parma Magica, which, as new mysteries tended to do, had captivated his attention for some time. He was, however, encouraged to travel by other members of his house (realising the young magus was in danger of becoming remarkably closeted, and believing in any case that every member of the house should move around, Gifted or not), who proved to be perfectly capable of arranging this for him, seeing to it that news of the young magus reached the Redcap serving EdwardOfMilton as librarian at the Schola Pythagoranis, who was known to be considering renewing his covenant. Once Edward determined to do so, Claudine suggested Angelo as a candidate.
