Google blocking 7zip

Some time this week, Google started blocking 7zip encrypted archives (.7z). 
You can no longer send or receive emails which contain 7zip encrypted 
attachments nor share them using Google Drive.

I haven't seen any announcement about this...nor any discussion, but it's 
causing us (as a Google Apps for Education "customer") pain.

Google are, of course, only doing this for our protection. What other 
reason could there possibly be?
