Here are my latest thoughts on this.

haven't reposted them:

These are new and result mostly from ruminating about my previous
questions:

  1 README: v2: Use &\ for escaping; abolish \&
  2 README: v2: Line joining with &\
  3 README: v2: Rename Perdir to Suffix; provide Prefix and Final
  4 README: v2: $-doubling and macro assistance
