Splinter bid
A splinter bid is a double jump shift into a new suit, for example 1C-3H or 1S-4D. Such a bid shows:
- Support for partner's suit, if not already promised
- At least two losers better than the splinterer has promised so far (i.e. 5 or better from opener, 7 or better from responder)
- Singleton or void in the splintered suit
When considering a response to a splinter, consider that the promised loser count already suggests a 4-level contract. The distribution makes for a likely slam provided you have little wastage of honours in the splintered suit; in that case, look to ace-ask, key-ask or cue bid as per your partnership agreement. Otherwise, sign off.
