Sowerby Bridge station lies in the Calder Valley just southwest of Halifax. Although the station buildings date from the 1980s, parts of the station are much older.
The steps leading up to platform level from Holmes Road to the north of the station:
Looking down the steps, with the ramp up to platform 2 on the right and the subway behind us:
From the top of these steps a subway leads under the line to platform 1, and this ramp leads up to platform 2 for eastbound trains:
The subway emerges in this building on platform 2:
Just west of the building, this slightly more functional shelter on platform 2:
Looking westwards at the canopy on platform 2:
Platform 2 seems to have a disused edge, now slightly overgrown:
Platform 2 extends a long way beyond its currently used length:
The western end of platform 2:
Back down to the subway, which links the two sides of the station:
At the northern end of the subway, a blocked exit. Perhaps platform 1 was once an island?
Looking up the ramp that leads to platform 1 from the subway:
Platform 1, seen from platform 2 opposite:
Looking east on platform 1:
Looking west at the canopy on platform 1. The ramp down into the subway can be seen beyond the plant in the centre:
Looking west at the western end of platform 1:
South of platform 1 is the car park, and what remains of an older station building on this site:
Standing in the carpark, the approach to platform 1:
This building, now the Jubilee Refreshment Room, is the southern wing (and all that remains) of a 19th Century station building which was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. The `rear' of the building, facing the rest of the modern station:
Elaborate griffin-shaped lamps:
