The last assault ground to a halt on the defences, and slowly began to
pull out.  Small groups fled beyond the barrier and Apparated to
safety.

The Dark Lord was among the last to escape, most of his bodyguard
mauled by Hagrid's menagarie, and the Order saw this as the obvious
opportunity to press home their counter-attack.

Lavender scried Voldemort's location, and a small team was dispatched
to give the coup de grace.

It had been Dumbledore who had noted the date, but it was Ron who said
the last thing he heard before Harry killed him.
