Use 4ply or sock yarn and a 3mm hook.

Chain 50
Row 1: Ch1 (turning chain), sl st across, turn
Row 2: Ch 1, single crochet across, turn
Row 3: Join, taking care to twist work. Place marker at join for beginning of round. Chain 1, Single crochet to marker, slipstitch to join. On every round, sl st to join.

Check for fit at this point

Row 4 and 5: Ch2, half double crochet to marker,
Row 6 and 7: Ch3, double crochet to marker,
Row 8: Ch3, triple crochet, finish off.
