Girona is a county in Catalunya Vella and also the capital city of that county and the see of its bishopric, which in our period extended beyond the county into Besalú and Empúries. The area began Carolingian rule in what would become Catalonia by seceding from Muslim rule in 785 and thus inadvertantly created Catalonia.
