Remus shook his head, and growled, at his most wolf-like.

"They won't work, not this time. Go, run for the ship." His hair was pushing from the backs of his hands, and Harry wondered if Tonks could do the same thing, and then grabbed the others. Mary Lou ran - round in a circle. She gave the others the slip, and came back to confront the werewolf.

"Why?"

"Because I am not human. I never was."

"First Best doesn't mean being the first that ever there was, but being the Best that ever there could be, the one that, when one finds it, you will reach for no matter how much time you have left. The pearl without price."

"The missing coin, the lost sheep." Remus gave an ironic bark of a laugh, trying to remain upright long enough to give Mary Lou the chance to get away, but she wouldn't.

Even when he doubled over, howling in pain as the change went through him, Mary Lou didn't move, watching the change transfixed.

He snarled, and leapt towards her throat....

Because I did two posts in a row, and no one seemed to be interested any more.

I have more in mind, but thought I'd let it die quietly.

----------

Mary Lou couldn't move, and the wolf went harmlessly over her shoulder - as if he was playing a cruel game with his food. To Angel, it looked like a cat with a mouse, to Pippa, it looked like a barbarous perversion of what it meant to be in the dog family, and all that they stood for.

Remus bounded round, half-snarling, then barking playfully, as if he didn't know what to do, or where to be. Harry walked out of the wood, and drew his wand.

"Expecto Patronum!" The Silver Stag erupted from the wand, far more solid than anything that they had ever seen. It caught sight of the Wolf, and they began to play, which allowed Angel to kick mary lou until her reflexes kicked in, and she moved herself.

Harry stared into space, but Angel wasn't so worried about him - he had the magical wherewithal to protect himself. The patronus charm that drove off dementors seemed to behave differently here. Taken back to the Room of Requirement, he remembered how the Avatars had played together.

"You found your father, Harry, you found inside yourself."

----------

For those non-HP literates. The Patronus charm scenes are some of the most poignant in the books. A dementor is akin to the experience of depression, and sucks all the happiness. A Patronus is all the positive energy, and is fuelled by digging into the happiest memories of the individual.
In the room of requirement, the patronuses of the different students play together, and this was what made me think of it. The Stag is the avatar for Harry's Father, and Remus' best friend, who was killed 15 years ago by Lord Voldemort.
