Why did I read this book?

It was given to me by Kit Dawe (see also Birdsong and A Month in the Country), and I'm always interested to read more dystopian fiction, particularly when it's a 'classic' like this.

What's on the post-it note on the inside back cover?

A knife is the most permanent, the most immortal, the most ingenious of all of man's creations. The knife was a guillotine, the knife is a universal means of resolving all knots, and the path of paradox lies along the blade of a knife -- the only path worthy of the mind without fear.
