Why did I read this book?

It was given to me by the same friend who gave me Tipping the Velvet; at the time when he gave me this, I hadn't even heard of Moorcock, and didn't think the book looked like 'my kind of thing'. In the intervening couple of years, I lost touch with the friend (although we've since re-established contact) and heard of Moorcock.
