Why did I read this book?

I'd meant to read it for years; my interest in it had been reawakened by everybody talking about the TV adaptation (and mentioning that a certain friend of mine strongly resembled a certain character in it). I decided I really ought to read the book before seeing the TV version. My holiday in Switzerland at Easter provided a perfect opportunity to get round to reading lots of long-deferred books; see also: Angela Carter, The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr Hoffman; Aldous Huxley, Point Counter Point; Jack Kerouac, On the Road; Tom Standage, The Victorian Internet. I read a considerable portion of this while sat at the top of a mountain, outside a ruined castle, looking across the valley to the next castle along.
