I remembered the book getting a lot of good reviews when it was published (and of course winning the Booker Prize in 1993). Also, I'd read and enjoyed The Commitments. I bought this copy of Paddy Clarke... for 80p in Loughborough's Imperial Cancer charity shop in 1999; it's taken me this long to get round to reading it, and thus discovering the reason for the title.
