Why did I read this book?

It had fascinated me (sitting on my parents' bookshelves) for years, particularly when I noticed that the cover art was entitled "Bison Ravi" -- an anagram of "Boris Vian". Which made me wonder: was the author's name a pseudonym? Was the artwork a "real" work of art, or a joke based on the author's (real or pseudonymic) name? I still have no idea. When I first saw this book I was rather pleased with myself for noticing the mention of Jean Pulse Heartre and 'getting' the joke; which shows how long ago it was.
