It had been recommended to me by Sion Arrowsmith, who hadn't read it. Sion's irc nickname is 'sparrow', after the protagonist in this book; when I asked about the reasoning behind this, Sion pointed me at an article about the book (warning: contains spoilers!) to explain the nickname. Fortunately the spoilers didn't make much sense to me when I hadn't read the book, and the timelapse between reading the article and reading the book (lent to Sion by Emmet) meant that I'd forgotten them all by then anyway.
