Why did I read this book?

I rescued it from Oxfam because I remembered Simon Cozens mentioning it -- it was the first time I'd heard of it -- in our first year at Oxford. At the time he was working on a translation of it, a translation which, unusually, rendered the title as "The Little Devil". He claimed this was more idiomatic and thus more correct.
