30.7.2007 Dooring zone bike lane considered harmful In this clip you can see the problem with the bike lane on Coldham's Lane (from Sainsbury's roundabout towards the railway). Cyclists in this lane are frequently too close to parked cars, blind T-junction exits, etc. The large lorry which you see overtake me came up behind me fairly close and hooted at me. I decided discretion was the better part of valour and pulled over although of course that meant I had to nearly stop to avoid being in the very uncomfortable gap you see at about 15.8s in the video. Without the lane the pressure on cyclists to adopt an unsafe position would be reduced. (Apologies for the lack of footage from the rear camera - the batteries died en-route and the recoverable part of the video didn't include this incident.) ----- 31.7.2007 References to CCyC comments when lane painted The Coordinator of the Cambridge Cycling Campaign has pointed out that the Campaign objected to this lane in 2003 on exactly the same grounds http://www.camcycle.org.uk/campaigning/letters/2003/#NA03009 but Councillors paid little regard http://www.camcycle.org.uk/jumpto/ajc2003june leaving the Cycling Campaign to report about it in their Newsletter: http://www.camcycle.org.uk/newsletters/49/article4.html
