22.5.07 Dangerous passing, cycle lane violation by KJ03 GNX Today at about 17:20 I was riding back from town from Mitcham's Corner to Gilbert Road. As I stopped at the lights at the end of Gilbert Road, I looked around and saw that a silver car was sitting partly in the mandatory cycle lane. A cyclist was forced to carefully pick their way past. After the lights had gone green and I was riding up Gilbert Road, I observed the same car overtaking some cyclists ahead of me in a dangerous manner: there wasn't enough space and the driver nearly collided with oncoming traffic. At the Carlton Way lights I caught up with the car and picked my way up the cycle lane. I merged with the traffic stream as it accelerated, but the same silver car overtook me dangerously close and unnecessarily (since I was accelerating and an opportunity to overtake would have arisen very shortly in any case). The driver remained within earshot of me for a number of seconds because our speeds were limited to that of the traffic in front; I shouted `too close' and the driver replied `I was overtaking' as if that was an excuse. (In the video, events of interest are as follows: 0:00:08 cyclist picks their way past the errant motorist 0:00:32 overtaking at speed, over the centreline, in the face of oncoming traffic 0:01:58 Carlton way lights go green, remaining events of interest)
