Recreation
I may be an engineer by trade, and a geek by choice, but that doesn't mean that I don't have a creative bone in my body (of course, some will argue that engineering is by its very nature creative, but far more see only the hard hat, the anorak and the pages of maths, so I thought I'd put this disclaimer on here anyway).
I like to write. If something matters to me, I want to put down in writing my thoughts on the matter. In the past, I'd send long opinionated rants to USENET, but very few people ever seemed to bother reading them, and even fewer replied. So I decided not to bother any more. I still read quite a lot of newsgroups, but I rarely reply, and when I do, my replies tend to be snippy, spiky one-liners rather than pages and pages of prose.
Instead, I post such things to my LiveJournal instead (mostly friends-only). Still people rarely reply, but that's OK and much better than USENET. It's there for my own convenience, after all, rather than anyone else's. Before I had a LiveJournal, I'd tried having an "essays" section here, but since I only ever got around to writing one essay (on the unlamented Section 28), I've got rid of that section in this update. There's also a short story (10000 words) here.
Those of you who visited my old website will know that there was a poetry section there. Don't worry, it's still here, and I've even added a few new ones that I've found hanging around the place! I've reorganised my poetry page rather, though, as I had become increasingly unconvinced that the "theme" structure I previously had was useful. Some of you who have visited in the past have sent me really encouraging email about my work; thank you so much, it means more to me than you'll ever know ! Some of you have even suggested that I ought to be thinking about trying to get some of my work published - I'm thinking about it, honestly, but I don't think I'm quite ready for that treadmill just yet.
I've also got not one, but two, photography pages. The first is for some photos I took back in 1997 and 1998. The second is for some more recent photos (2004), some of which were taken with a Pentax SLR, and some with a FujiFilm FinePix digital camera. All photos were originally in colour; any which are no longer so have been manipulated digitally !
