Review of Whitby Gothic Weekend 8.5

November 2001

Thursday arrived and we (Liz, Peta, Patrick and myself) sailed Northwards in our chariot of lightning. Wednesday had been fantastic and I was soemwhat perky from that. We were anticipating a telephone call from Bob from work, telling me if I still had a job or not. It came, it was good, and I perked up even more, to the point of some people tiring slightly of being grinned at to be told that I still had a job.

We arrived, had some seafood and the job of spotting known goths and soon to be known goths started. Following best goth hunting instincts we sallied forth to the Elsinore, where we found some. So we spent the evening there, debating if we should go on further to the club night that was on. We eventually accepted our own inertia and stayed where we were. Old faces we seen again, and new faces found.

Friday started slowly for me. Not quite sure what had felled me, but I wasn't feeling too great, so too it easy during the day so that I would be okay for going out to see the bands in the evening. Frances arrived and was found. Pizza was eaten, and then the Spa charged with perking and bouncing intent. Arrving during the D.U.S.T set, it was pretty easy to start the whole perking thing, which was set about with vigor and energy.

Hooray for people and hooray for bands. The evening was fantastic.

Saturday we decided to do some things. We went up to the church of St. Marys, and found some pirate graves (Skull and crossbones upon them) and had a look around the inside of St Marys. By the time that we reached the Abbey, we were too late and it was closing, so we descended into the town adn scoured through the charity shops for exciting things. Its so much more fun when they have already gone out and scoured Yorkshire for all the wierd black things that have stuck around other charity shops for ages.A nice dinner out was had, and then we headed to the Spa. I didn't really see anything of the bands, as I was being sociable instead of doing anything like gigging. And the bands didn't sound overly exciting anyhow. I like people there should be more nice and fluffy people in the world.

Sunday we had Abbey success! We took a lot of photographs, had a lot of photograps taken of us. Some of us got chained to some railings by people that we didn't know, and it was generally glorious. After that it was the Elsinore, followed by nostar's and suelta's flat, for conversations and more boozy activities.

Quote of the weekend was heard muttered by some local as he walked past,

"Its just not right y'know, goths on mobile phones."
