I was pleased to win this game on my first attempt both because it's a 2-streak and because Jiyva is infuriating and I never want to play them again. To be fair, I did mellow to Jiyva a bit - the assortment of aux attacks helped make this character utterly fearsome by the end, and I wasn't short of consumables even with jellies eating some of them - but something that is very annoying is whenever you find some stuff you want but there are jellies around, you have an incentive to carefully optimise the order in which you pick things up. This makes for a lot of fiddly makework of a kind I expect DCSS to avoid. It was also annoying to be unable to throw large rocks without thinking about nearby jellies; without Jiyva, this character would have thrown hundreds more large rocks. Furthermore, if you are in light armour, Jiyva will gradually move all your Strength into Dexterity (and Intelligence); even getting 2 Strength every 3 levels, it was a long time between getting Jivya and even getting back to my starting 19 Strength, denying me a lot of melee damage output. Last but not least, jellies eating (say) V:5 makes a lot of message spam. I'd gone Tr - well, partly because it's one of the handful of species I haven't won, but also because I thought it would be strong enough to get to Jiyva's altar. This worked out more or less OK; I got some throwing nets off early gnolls and then could net most uniques. However, I completely forgot to throw anything serious at Grinder and she nearly killed me. I was saved by potions of desperation but got Frail 1 as a result. I'd eat a lot of purple chunks in an effort to get rid of this, but to no avail (and doing so also gave me Frail 2 and Deformed). On D:6 I bought a ring with {MR+ AC+2} which was a stalwart for most of the game; I was not well supplied with MR until much later. I met Maurice on D:8; he stole an unidentified scroll and read it - it was summoning, and this put me in the odd situation of knowing what a given scroll inscription was but not having it recorded by the game. Very NetHack. After killing Maurice on D:9 I got shafted to D:12 and hit an ice cave; I was a bit nervous about going into a portal I'd hit early, and it got a bit hairy, but I got a +11 great sword {flame, +Rage} which was just what the doctor ordered for hydras... although in spite of that I did have to blink away from a hydra on Lair:6 after a series of bad rolls. I got the Jiyva altar and brought jellies past all the discarded junk in early D in an effort to quickly get the piety to get rid of my bad mutations. As a result I hit ***** by Orc:2 and could stop being Frail, and ****** shortly afterwards so went to scoop up the slimy rune and whatever of the stuff the jellies didn't eat. Most of the rest was pretty plain sailing; I got Abyssed on Spider:4 but it wasn't a problem. (On reflection, this character was pretty buff by Zot and should have tried at least for the Abyssal rune.) Elf was OK, and got an amulet with {Reflect Int+2 Slay+3 SH+5 Stlth+}; between this and some other randarts I was surprisingly stealthy for a troll until I got into GDS. Vaults:1-4 had Zonguldrok's Shrine (and I pretty well stomped the antique lich) and gave me a randart FDS from acquirement which I wore in an effort to stop Jiyva stealing all my strength. This was just as well; I didn't find a GDS in all Depths, only getting one on Z:1 where I went before V:5 in an effort to sort this out. (Of course, I didn't have to do V:5 at all, but I tend to observe a 4-rune minimum these days.) V:5 was fine; I nipped out halfway to buy a manual of Armour. Mennas turned up at one point but, while I hasted as a precaution, died in a few hits. It turned out to be well worth the trip since I got a shield with {MR++ Str+4} neatly solving my MR problem and letting me swap some better items in other slots. Zot was really very easy compared to normal. There were some OOFs and aliches but they went down easily to large rocks and claw attacks. The orbrun only had one panlord, and they were easy to kill. The only god I have left to do is Elyvilon; the only species I have left that can worship Ely are Ko and Sp. Ho hum.
