Dziban has been settled for over 1000 years. The settlement dates from a time before long-range hyperspace travel was possible within human lifespans. Closeness to the parent planet was an important consideration in its selection, and so it's less like Earth than many colonies of more recent date.
Dziban's main problem is the fact that it's a little too far from its sun for comfort, making it very cold. Most of the population live close to the equator. The poles are virtually unexplored. The gravity is around 1G. It was originally rich in natural resources but obviously over a long period these have been used up. Power is mainly generated from renewable resources and there are a lot of shortages of such things as useful metals. Recycling is a religion.
Much of the native wildlife and the plants are poisonous. Centuries of work have not completely eradicated these. Some people are very allergic to the native plants. Rumours abound as to what sort of native life might exist in the colder regions of the planet!
Dziban's age means it has an unusually large population of several billion. Politically it is one entity: the State of Dziban. The capital is the city of Bodenhorn. The planet is divided into several regions, which in practice run their own economies. There are two main political parties. The current opposition is the Freedom Party, led by various members of the Krovny family. The current head of state is President Scadden. He has a sister, who believes the Kronvy family are trying to murder her. The Krovnys make much political capital from this. The Freedom Party are more pro-Vega than the current government.
It exports expertise of various varieties (owing to the large population there's someone on Dziban who'll claim to be an expert on anything you can come up with). It's particularly good at medicine and there are techniques available on Dziban that most planets can only dream of. There's a thriving art market too. It has no state spaceship building/ hyperspace/ teleport infrastructure at all but rents it from VTC.
Companies that appeared in season one included Gaston Goode, a large print media group. Two of their publications are Celebrity Trash and Regor News. Celebrity Trash is similar to Hello only even more tacky; Regor News resembles the Fortean Times. Regor News's editor is Jen Leybold and it is based in the city of Riley. The other two companies that were mentioned were a telco called Heliotrope and a vaguely unethical medical research company called Biomedica. Both are Riley-based.
As well as Riley, another city called New Trondheim has been mentioned. This is situated in the coldest inhabited part of Dziban.
VTC originated on Dziban some time ago, but long since moved its main offices into orbit for legal reasons. The relationship between VTC and the State of Dziban is fairly cool. Dziban has a state intelligence service, the Dziban Security Service, who don't get on well with Vega at all.
