Computer Officer at Pembroke College Cambridge
I maintain the College's Netware 5 servers for students and staff. These machines provide file, application, mail, and print services to all members of college. I also installed and maintain various database servers on Windows NT server.
I was closely involved in a recent project to redesign the College website, installing and configuring a new server running Apache on Linux; giving technical advice to the web design committee; and writing CGI applications for the new site.
Another major project has been improving the security of the College's network by implementing network monitoring, configuring network hardware and setting up a private port-blocking router.
The recent NT workstation rollout in Pembroke involved my creating standard 'builds' of Windows NT which were then replicated to nearly 100 workstations for students and staff.
I also provide training and day-to-day support to users of a very wide range of ability levels, and organise connecting students' own machines to the college network.
1996-1999
PhD in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, Cambridge University, Phase Transformations and Complex Properties Group
Thesis title: "Wear and Microstructure Relationships in
Carbide-Free Bainitic Rail Steel"
Supervisor: Prof. H.K.D.H. Bhadeshia FRS
My PhD involved neural network modelling on computers,
electron and light microscopy, and thermo-mechanical simulation.
I wrote a large amount of IT documentation for my research group, assisted with managing the group's Solaris machines, and maintained a Linux file server.

Role-Playing
I am an active member of Cambridge University Roleplaying Society
and have served on the committee as President. I am currently
running a weekly campaign.
Teaching
Since finishing my PhD I have continued to supervise
undergraduates. This year I taught 1A Maths for Natural Science
for Christ's College which involved relearning the material,
setting and marking work and going over difficult concepts with
students in weekly supervisions.
