initview is a small Perl script which displays a summary of the activities
of init.  It was written on a Debian Linux system, but may also function on
other distributions and UNIX variants with a System V init.

The syntax of initview is as follwos.  The command can be executed in a 
number of different ways.

   initview

Without parameters, the command displays a list of init scripts that have
been run at run level 3, the default network configuration.  Those that
are started at this run level are marked "On", the rest are marked "Off".
In addition, initview displays the name of scripts executed at boot time.

   initview <script name>

When a script name is supplied, initview will check that particular script
and return 1 if the script is active at run level 3, 0 if not.  This means
that it can be used from shell scripts to check whether a certain 
feature is configured or not.

   initview -v

With the -v switch, initview displays detailed information about what each
script is doing at each runlevel.  The information takes the form of a 
three letter code identical to that used by init.  The initial letter is
either an S or a K, and determines whether the script will br called in
start "S" or kill "K" mode.  In effect, the former passes 'start' as an
argument to the script, the latter 'stop'.

In addition to this is a two digit number from "00" to "99", the lower
the number, the earlier the script is executed.  Note that "K" scripts
are always executed before "S" scripts.  For more details, please consult
"man init".

The -v switch can be used with single scripts in which case verbose 
information for that script only is executed.

Disclaimer: I hope you find this program useful.  It was, however, a quick
hask performed during a bout of insomnia, so therefore probably doesn't 
represent high art.  Think of it as a starting point for your own better
script if you like.
