the operational cost of dealing with large amounts of small-value cash
cannot be underestimated. all that is reduced by oyster type systems.
that's why all that nonsense a few years ago about allowing shops to
give a discount if you didn't use a card never came to anything:
cheques and cash cost shops more than cards (in general).
