Dear ukcrypto members

Happy New Year to all!

I am posting a notification for an event that is being held next month (7th
Feb) in Swindon, organised by the Wiltshire Branch of the British Computer
Society. I know this posting is different to what is usually discussed here.
The purpose of posting it here is both

(1) to publicise the event and invite all those who are interested in
attending (the event is free!), and also

(2) raise a question about how best to promote and raise awareness about a
career in 'IT security'. Our intention with this event was to bring people
together from the academia and the industry, and highlight some of the
challenges and opportunities available in this area. Any general comments
and ideas are very welcome.

The event is free and open to all but delegates are required to register.
Early registration is highly recommended. Please register to attend the
event at:

http://www.wiltshirebcs.org/EventFutureDetails.asp?EID=50C5373EB21448E5B6C813B9705F5685

Universities, training providers and employers are all also invited. We have
three speakers including

Debi Ashenden, Senior Research Fellow, Cranfield University. She would be
sharing her experiences with us on her role as a security consultant,
academic and researcher, and also the new MSc in Information Assurance that
has recently been launched at the University.

Alex Lucas, Principal Security Development Lead, Microsoft. He intends to
enlighten us on the latest security developments at Microsoft.

Will Deane, Principal Consultant and Chief Technology Officer at Regency IT
Consulting (Cheltenham). In addition to working as a CLAS (CESG Listed
Advisor Scheme) consultant, he is responsible for the development of the
managed security services including protective monitoring and encryption
services. His areas of interest include network security, security
architecture design, protective monitoring and intrusion detection.
